Fulton County Sheriff Department Message:

Just to let everyone know there is a round of "phone scams" going on right now. We have had a few reported here in Fulton County and it was on the news this morning out of South Bend.

The scam is usually aimed at elderly people but anyone can be a victim of these scams.  The two recently reported to the Sheriff's Department were as follows:  You grandchild is in jail / hospital and need money for bail or medical bills.  The person then wants a bank account number or wants you to wire funds or put on a "Green Dot" card which are purchased at a drug store or some other retail outlet.

You should be VERY CAUTIOUS when someone ask you for this type of information over the phone and you should press for more details about the family member to see if it is legit.  More than likely it is not.  You should never give out any financial information unless you know who is truly on the other end of the phone or if you are the one that initiated the phone call.

If you have any questions concerning this you should contact your local law enforcement agency.

Be Safe
