Winter Storm Warning Issued by NWS NorthernIndiana (Northern Indiana and Northeastern Ohio)

Indiana Target Area: Allen, Blackford, De Kalb, Grant, Huntington, Noble, Northern Kosciusko, Southern Kosciusko, Wabash, Wells, and Whitley Counties.

 

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THURSDAY TO 7 AM EST SATURDAY.

*WHAT: Moderate to heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.

*WHERE: Portions of northern Indiana and northwest Ohio.

*WHEN: From 7 PM Thursday to 7 AM EST Saturday.

*IMPACTS: Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact holiday travel. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and cause power outages. The dangerously cold wind chills to 20 below to 30 below zero will cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

 

Instructions: If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Indiana Target Area: Adams, Allen, Blackford, Cass, De Kalb, Eastern St. Joseph, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Huntington, Jay, Lagrange, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Northern Kosciusko, Northern La Porte, Pulaski, Southern Kosciusko, Southern La Porte, Starke, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, Western St. Joseph, White, and Whitley Counties.

 

WINTER STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING.

*WHAT: Blizzard conditions possible. A wintry mix Thursday afternoon and evening will likely transition to snow Thursday night. Snow may be moderate to heavy at times through Saturday morning. Storm total snow amounts may exceed 6 inches, especially near Lake Michigan. Westerly winds could gust as high as 55 mph, and will cause blowing and drifting.

*WHERE: Portions of northern Indiana, southwest Michigan and northwest Ohio.

*WHEN: From Thursday evening through Saturday morning.

*IMPACTS: Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. The cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

*ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Dangerous cold is expected Thursday night into Sunday. Low temperatures will be in the single digits above and below zero. High temperatures will be in the single digits and teens above zero. Wind chill values could fall to around 20 to 30 below zero at times. The lowest wind chills will be Friday into Saturday. Additional snow accumulations are expected near Lake Michigan through Sunday in west-northwest wind-favored snow belts.

AREAS OF FOG EARLY THIS MORNING.
Fog continues to develop with worsening visibility west of I-69 early this morning. Visibility will drop below one-quarter of a mile in some locations before conditions begin to improve after 3 am EST. If traveling, be prepared for fog that could suddenly reduce visibility. Slow down and remain alert for changing conditions.

Slippery Conditions in Many Areas Tonight.
With temperatures falling below freezing tonight, many areas could see slippery conditions or black ice, especially where snow has accumulated on roadways or where roadways are wet. Be sure to use caution while driving, leave more following distance between you and other drivers, and use your brakes earlier.

WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ THIS EVENING TO 10 AM EST /9 AM CST/ SATURDAY.

*WHAT: Southwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.

*WHERE: Portions of northern Indiana, southwest Michigan and northwest Ohio.

*WHEN: From 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ this evening to 10 AM EST /9 AM CST/ Saturday.

*IMPACTS: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

*ADDITIONAL DETAILS: While a few wind gusts to 45 mph will be possible this evening, the greatest chance for higher gusts will come late tonight into early Saturday along and immediately behind the cold front, as well as closer to Lake Michigan.

 

Instructions: Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.
